April 2014 – Austin Woman Magazine – By Sam Jackson – Run, walk, swim, bike, skateboard or skate to help fight diabetes and childhood obesity

If you’ve got some spare time this month and want to really get fit, you should join up with one of the most ambitious fitness communities in Texas, the Million Mile Month team. The organization’s goal is to collectively walk, run, swim, bike, skateboard or skate a million miles by the end of April, as well as raise $1 million for organizations like the American Diabetes Association to fight childhood obesity.

millionIt’s headed by local fitness-minded entrepreneurs like Steve Amos, who has partnered with community health organizations, schools and backers that include REI and Silicon Labs. They look ready to achieve their goal this year.

While the organization will be hosting sponsored events you can attend throughout the month, you can participate from anywhere as long as you log your miles, or host your own Million Mile events and get others to contribute and promote fitness throughout Austin. As you accumulate miles, you also have a chance to win valuable prizes, including a paddleboard package from SUP (Standup Paddle-boarding) ATX.

The event will start with a launch party on April Fool’s Day at the Austin City Plaza. Walk, run, whatever you like, just get out there and help them raise!
