Green Ribbon Schools is proud to be awarding a Green Ribbon Schools Award to 63 schools for the 2011-2012 school year. You can view all of the Green Ribbon Schools Award recipients by visiting the participating schools page on greenribbonschools.org.

The schools recognized for their 2011-2012 leadership published a minimum of 1 project under each of the 4 Green Ribbon Schools’ Cornerstones (Eco-Campus, Natural Classroom, Health & Fitness, and Nature Adventure.)

Here are some of our favorite projects from this year’s award recipients:

  • St. Mary’s City School in an isolated Alaskan village learned the role of hunting and trapping in their cultural history. (Woody Woodgate, teacher)
  • Commander William C. McCool School in Guam learned about a local limestone forest and wetlands by meeting with a scientist, building observation areas and posting their findings in a school hallway dedicated to the project. (Debora Moore, teacher)
  • Meiners Oaks School in Ojai, Calif. developed an educational campaign (public announcements, websites, newsletter, raps, and poems) that motivated the entire student body to create an “eco-campus” that focused on daily campus-wide activities (saving electricity, reducing waste, “green” commuting, recycling).  The school celebrated achieving its goal with a final assembly that included a theme-based outdoor concert, student art and skits.  (Janis Duncan, teacher)
  • Doss Elementary in Austin, Texas sent their entire 5th grade class on a 3 day, 2 night camping trip to the Outdoor Learning Center at the Highland Lakes Camp in Spicewood, TX. While on the trip students spent time at many different outdoor learning stations including the climbing wall, the problem solving bomb diffuser and Mohawk Walk, Topsoil Tour, fishing, Energy, Whale Watch and Mt. Tops, orienteering, and archery. (S. Sherwod, teacher)
